RADON
TESTING
Testing is simple and only
takes 48 hours for a short-term computerized
test. This test is ideal if you want an idea of
what the radon level in the house is, or for a
real estate transaction.
The radon test should be
performed on the lowest floor of the house that
is lived or is considered habitable space. In most cases testing
is not be done in a cellar or
crawl space.
Where testing has revealed an
average of 3.9pCi/L or higher, reduction will be
recommended as beneficial.
A level of 3pCi/L can be found in many homes and
should not be considered a problem.
Before testing can begin all
the windows and exterior doors in the house must
be kept closed for 24 hours. During the testing
period exterior doors can be used normally, but must
be closed as soon as entered.
Windows must not be opened.
Doors to the basement must be kept closed.
Exterior doors to basement will be sealed, and cannot be used.
Whole house fans may not be operated.
The heat or A/C should be operated normally.
The testing computer is very
small and self contained. Any tampering with,
covering or moving of the testing computer is
detected and recorded by the computer. Excessive
opening of doors and windows, or ventilating by
other means in an effort to reduce the radon
level reading is also recorded by the computer.
Should the test results
indicate that the results are questionable, the
test will need to be done again using stricter
monitoring methods and security seals on doors,
windows and heating and air conditioning
controls.
