 BACTERIA TEST
Also known as a Coliform
bacteria test.
One of the most common water tests, checks for
bacteria in the drinking water. One of the most common reasons for bacteria in
well water is a contaminated well casing.
In many cases a well will have a build up of
bacteria for no explainable reason.
Other areas of
concern would be E-coli (bacteria) entering the water supply as
a result of a failing septic tank or sewer line allowing fecal
matter to contaminate the water table, or
water run off from certain agricultural or farming lands.
This test should be performed
whenever a property with a well is purchased.
Some lending institutions insist on this test
being performed.
Note: Bacteria testing samples can only be taken Monday
through
Wednesday due to lab restrictions.
Lab results:
three to four days.
If bacteria presence is found in the water
sample, the well will need to be disinfected and retested before
use. In most cases disinfecting the well and the distribution
system (pipes, pump etc.) will remove the bacteria problem.
For methods of disinfection see
our Technical/FAQ - Wells.
