SELECTING AN AGENT

When considering the purchase of homeowners or any other type of insurance, the first questions we must ask ourselves is who are we going to trust. Who will be our advisor when determining the best coverage structure, insurance company, adjusting services, costs & deductibles. 

Never before could you purchase insurance and financial products from such a diverse group of companies and agents than today, so how do you choose what is right for you. First, decide what you are looking for. Many people just shop for the best price, and fail to look for other services like claims handling support or 24hr contact availability. 

While the cost of the individual insurance product you are wanting to purchase may vary slightly from company to company, the commitment to customer service from agent to agent or company can be very different. 

Here are a few things to look for when selecting your agent or company:

• Make sure your insurance program is designed for you and not just what you ask for. Each policy has many endorsements that tailor the coverage to your needs and a good agent will spend time discovering and explaining them for you.

• Make sure the agent who designed your insurance program will be the same one handling your claim if you have a loss. Many people find themselves handed over to an adjusting service that leaves them handling their own claims without the support of the one who designed it for them in the first place.

• Make sure the agent can be easily accessible when you need them. Many agents and companies have installed 24hr call centers to handle your needs when they occur.

• Look for agents that are committed to continuing education and demonstrate a good understanding of the insurance policies they are describing to you. Ask specific questions about the coverage's and have the agent spend as much time with you as you need to feel comfortable using his/her services.
